Starting out

Starting out

If you have never climbed before or are just starting out, these advice sections will hopefully answer some of the many questions you will have. Many years ago rock climbing was not nearly as safe as it is today. This is mainly due to the many advances in climbing equipment over the years. Thankfully we no longer have to wrap a simple three strand interwoven rope around our waist, tie it in a knot and off we go!!!!! and don't forget to pray !!!!

Many people see climbing as a physical and mental challenge that drives them to complete higher and harder climbs, to others it is a hobby or past time that they enjoy with friends or as a family. Not everyone wants to climb outdoors, some people climb for many years in one of the many indoor climbing centres across the UK.

No matter what type of climbing you intend to do the most important thing to remember is safety at all times. Climbing can seem intimidating if you are a beginner or just thinking of starting out. Most beginners are surprised how quickly you can get started and learn the basic techniques. Many indoor climbing walls offer beginner training courses that will equip you with the basic safety instructions, how to correctly wear your harness and ensure it is fitted securely, basic knots, how to safely belay another climber along with climbing techniques. If you choose to venture outdoors, most indoor climbing centres also operate outdoor climbing courses.

If you want to start by going outside straight away (many people do), it is easy to find your nearest outdoor centres. There are many throughout the UK operating courses that cater for people of all abilities.

You do not have to be trained or hold any qualifications to rock climb, it is also not compulsory to attend an official training course. Some beginners learn simply by reading books, this however is not advisable given the amount of risk involved, it is advisable to learn how to climb by attending a course or courses and being trained by a professional / trained or experienced climber. Nothing can replace excellent training by a qualified climber

Climbing and mountaineering are activities with a high risk factor which could lead to personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be fully responsible for their own actions and involvement.
